Butler Rape
Falls Over Precipice While Hunting Stock on breaks of Salmon River
This community was shocked Sunday afternoon by the announcement by telephone
of the tragic death of W. H. [should say Butler] who lived on the divide
between Grangeville and Whitebird [Idaho] by falling over a precipice. The
word came to Dr. F.A. Campbell who was called to the scene of the tragedy.
Mr. Rape and Wm. Mock, it would seem were hunting up stray cattle when they
became separated. Shortly afterward Mr. Mock heard Mr. Rape cry out "I'm
gone, I'm gone." He rushed to the spot and found Mr. Rape had fallen over
the rim rock, rolling down a quarter of a mile. It was necessary to make a
long detour to reach him and when he got there Mr. Rape was dying. His head
was crushed in and the body lacerated all over. He had dismounted and was on
foot when he went over the precipice. The accident happened on what is known
as the rise, between White Bird and Grangeville. . . .
Deceased was 72 years of age last February. He was born in
Taylorsville, Ill. and moved here from Dayton ten years ago. He leaves four
sons. Oscar and Walter of Camas Prairie, George of Ahsahka and Ed of Tacoma.
