Merle E.
Sloan, 87, of Clearwater, Fla., died Sept. 9 [2005] at Wake Forest
University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., while on vacation. He was
born in Butler and moved to the Clearwater area from Zelienople in 1957.Mr.
Sloan enjoyed model railroading, bee keeping, gardening and being outdoors.
He played 3 score softball for 20 years in Clearwater. He had been a
salesman for Borden Dairy for 17 years and also worked for the City of
Clearwater Parks & Recreation Forestry Division for 10 years. He was a
charter member of Faith United Church of Christ in Clearwater. Surviving are
a daughter and son, Cheryll S. Wells and Edward M. Sloan, both of
Clearwater; grandchildren, Brett S. and Marlaina L. Younger, both of Largo,
Fla., Christopher D. Younger of Reidsville, N.C., and Barbara J. Muller of
Waldorf, Md.; and three great-grandchildren. SLOAN - Arrangements for Merle
E. Sloan, who died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, were handled by SYLVAN ABBEY
FUNERAL HOME, Clearwater.

George William Burgh, 74, of Zelienople died Monday at his home.
Born Nov. 20, 1930, in Middle Lancaster, he was the son of Winfield and
Matilda Rape Burgh. He was a Marine veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Burgh
was a member of the English Lutheran Church, Zelienople, and a
life-member of the Zelienople American Legion Post 474 and the
Zelienople Volunteer Fire Department. He was a 48-year member of the
Harmony Lodge 429 F&AM, where he was a past master and secretary for the
past 10 years. He was a 33rd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite Consistory of
New Castle, where he was the secretary of the School of Instruction. He
also belonged to the Syria Temple, Legion of Honor; Red Cross of
Constantine, Knights of Templar, where he was the commander in 2002;
York Rite Sovereign College, Golden Triangle, Pittsburgh; and Antioch
Conclave, Royal Arch Chapter, Council of Royal Secrets. He retired as
water department superintendent for Zelienople after 18 years and was a
member of the Water Works Operators of Pennsylvania. He received the
Distinguished Citizen Award 2003 from the Zelienople-Harmony Chamber of
Commerce. Surviving are his wife, Leora C. Burgh, whom he married Nov.
20, 1954; three sons, Douglas W. Burgh and his wife, Jamie, of
Zelienople, G. Daniel Burgh and his wife, Debbie, of Spring, Texas, and
Dale R. Burgh and his wife, Janie, of St. Joseph, Mich.; a daughter,
Diane L. Burgh and her fiancé, Elex Jordan, of North Versailles; a
sister, Texanna R. Ketterer-Deener of Zelienople; and three
grandchildren, Justin, Ehren and Ethan Burgh.
BURGH - Burial will be at the church cemetery. Memorial donations
may be made to English Lutheran Church, 200 E. Grandview Ave.,
Zelienople, PA 16063, or Zelienople Area Public Library, 227 S. High
St., Zelienople, PA 16063 A Masonic service will be held at 6:45 p.m.
Thursday at the funeral home.

Sylvester H. Rape Jr. |

Sylvester H.
Rape Jr., 84, of Columbus, Ohio, died Wednesday at the Ohio State
University Medical Center. Born Sept. 25, 1920, in Evans City, he was
the son of Sylvester H. Rape Sr. and Carrie Ruth Erwin Rape. He
graduated from Evans City High School in 1938, then attended Geneva
College and received his bachelor's degree in mining engineering from
the University of Pittsburgh in 1948. He supported himself as a butcher
through school. He served as a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps
during World War II, where he was a lead bombardier on B-17s, earning
him the Distinguished Flying Cross. His career as a civil engineer began
with Morrison Knudsen when he worked in Venezuela and Peru in the 1950s.
He then worked for Perini Corp., and was involved with the development
of Pennsylvania and Ohio turnpikes and interstate highways in New
Hampshire and Vermont. He retired in 1985 from Joy Manufacturing, where
he worked as the technical consultant on mining and excavation. He was a
60-year member of American Legion Post 219 in Evans City and a member of
Hiram Lodge 9 F&AM in Claremont, N.H. He was also an avid fisherman,
woodworker and card player. He is survived by his loving wife of 61
years, Ann Vuchinich Rape; a daughter, Beverly Ann Erwin and her
partner, Mary Jane Elam, of Columbus, Ohio; a son, Mark Sylvester Rapf
and his wife, Anne Gunn, of Sheridan, Wyo.; three granddaughters,
Elizabeth Anne Rapf, Rebecca Jean Rapf and Julie Ann Zelenaks; and many
other loving members of his extended family. He was preceded in death by
his stepmother, Anne Thompson Rape; a sister, Edna Rape McCance; and a
daughter, Bonnie Jean Raye. RAPE - A private burial for Sylvester H.
Rape Jr., who died Wednesday, June 22, 2005, will be held at a later
date for the family at Evans City Cemetery. Arrangements are by

Merle R. Rape, 78, of Forward
Township died Thursday at his home. Born Feb. 3, 1926, in Zelienople, he
was the son of George W. and Iva Knauff Rape. He was a member of St.
Peter's Reformed Church of Zelienople, the Harmony Lodge 429 F&AM and
the Syria Shrine of New Castle. He was a former member and former
president of the Consistory of St. John's United Church of Christ, Evans
City. Mr. Rape owned and operated his farm on Brownsdale Road since 1954
and retired as plant superintendent at Resolite. He also served as a
Forward Township supervisor for six years and was a World War II Navy
veteran. He is survived by his wife, Norma A. Rape, whom he married,
Jan. 17, 1981; a daughter, Mrs. William (Linda) Erwin of Tennessee; two
sons, Jay Rape and his wife, Amy, of Alabama and Tim Rape and his wife,
Pam, of Evans City; two stepdaughters, Mrs. James (Bonnie) Snyder of
Slippery Rock and Mrs. Mark (Karen) Henderson of Ohio; a stepson, Glenn
Franceschina of Gibsonia; and two sisters, Margaret Smith of Zelienople
and Fonda Jones and her husband, Marvin, of Evans City. Also surviving
are a granddaughter, Ashley Costner of Tennessee, and a
great-granddaughter, Isabella Costner of Tennessee. His first wife,
Barbara Haddock Rape, died in November 1979.
RAPE - Friends of Merle R. Rape, who died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, will
be received from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at BOYLAN FUNERAL HOME, 324 E.

Margaret C. "Peggy" Smith, 58, of
Zelienople and formerly of Saxonburg died Saturday at Passavant
Retirement and Health Center in Zelienople. Born Sept. 23, 1946, in New
Brighton, Beaver County, she was a daughter of Margaret Smith of
Zelienople and the late Jack Smith. She attended Oak Grove Lutheran
Church and resided at the Polk State School in Polk, Pa., for 30 years.
She is survived by her mother, Margaret Smith of Zelienople; a sister,
Mrs. Bruce (Cindy) Knoechel of Zelienople; two brothers, Randy Smith of
Zelienople and Marty Smith of Beaver Falls; and a niece, nephew and
great-niece.
SMITH - Services for Margaret "Peggy" Smith, who died Saturday, Jan. 15,
2005, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Seaman Memorial Chapel of
Passavant Health Center, 401 S. Main St., Zelienople. The Revs. Wilfred
Goetze and John Hoogerbrugge will officiate. Burial will be in the
Zelienople Community Mausoleum.
